Accessory Circulatory Organ
Although the dorsal vessel (heart) is normally considered to be the organ responsible for blood circulation in insects, sometimes small sac-like structures are located at the base of appendages (antennae, legs, wings).
These structures are capable of contractions independent of the dorsal vessel, and assist in circulation. This is also called “accessory pulsatile organ.”
